For those of you who were into electronic music in '98 you may have come across a compilation by the ever present Sasha, a recreation of his set at the San Francisco Pride festivities. Disc one was a suave blend of funk disco techno displaying his talent to all, disc two was a more upfront affair dealing with the core of the matter, the matter in question being late night partying, and he showed us how it should be done.

One of the stand out tracks of that 2nd disc was this one by German outfit Der Dritte Raum (read more) called Hale Bop. It is a atmospheric extravaganza if there ever was one, a truly unique piece of production.

What brought be back to thinking about it was coming across this 1920's style rework!! by the guys themselves it seems at least. The funny thing is I think it works perfectly! You be the judge.

A quick dose of pure hedonism for you on this Sunday evening. Nothing quite matches the sheer power of Psy-Trance when it comes to electronic music or music for that fact. The force of the sounds is something to behold. Add a mega kilowatt sound rig three stories high and you have what is known loosely as an outdoor trance party. Things creatures are the fruit of mankind's endeavour to create the ultimate entertainment experience and I am happy to report that we have really perfected the art.

The key ingridient is without doubt the music, with its pulsating energy, it takes on a whole new meaning and almost becomes a living breathing 'thing'! Ok before I space myself right out here... have a sample of some of the more commercial variety of this wide and varied genre. These are two of the global scenes stalwarts, one from the Mecca of Psy Israel and the other hailing from the sunny shores of South Africa. Both are masters of their trade and can make noises come out of a computer that you wouldnt believe could.

A man I have been watching very closely since I heard his The Resident release on the seminal Dessous label, always one to watch, is the Italian stallion Vincenzo. He has such a groovy rhythmic sound that seems to capture the perfect balance between deep, disco, and tech. It is like a wonderfully classic cocktail, it looks good, it has style, and it will get you drunk.

This is a more melodic track of his, I would suggest checking all of the out on Beatport etc. especially his mix of Audio Soul Project and The Resident, but this track is no less him in its sound, so jacking and grooving (said that already!) it just hooks you in.

I just cant get enough of this French cat. The man is dripping with cool, he slides uphill he is so smooth. If I could throw a party budget no concern this guy would play in the line up for sure. He just captures such a cool groove, something always quite unique. He is not afraid of churning out a dance floor track or a smooth laid back number like this one, whatever the flavour he kills it.

This is a great recent track of his which in my mind really captures his style in a nutshell, pop music but not the kind we hear on the radio, this is french pop, it has soul and funk and a faint whiff of eighties cheese to it that gives it the edge that it has. Vive Le Falke!

Saving the best for last here on this Sunday night session. This track just jumped out at me on Beatport recently albeit the Jori Hulkonnen remix version, but this mix by Henrik B, a none less experienced player, is just as emotive. This track is far more dancefloor orientated, in fact it is totally dancefloor orientated, than the other, but it keeps the cool uplifting vibe going, with the slightly haunting essence of the other mix still there. A good track for the 4am crowd...ie me!

Here is a very cool little track by the always leftfield producer Dusty Kid. His style is and has been since I first heard him on Desyn Masiello Balance compilation eclectic. Ranging from hard techno with an industrial edge to the chilled out Cowboys and then to this little heart wrencher of a song. What is so admirable of him is how effortlessly he flows between the styles without even blinking and with each track sounding so differnt from the next, it seems he might be 'suffering' from a glorius case of schizophrenia! We love it whatever it may be.

I couldn't believe it when I first saw this track, these two total legends teaming up? It seemed too good to be true for a minute. But then you play it and the magic starts to unfold, slowly through the jacking loop of the hi hat and percussion comes the warm fuzzy familiar Boratto synth with just enough distortion on to tweak the vibe.

Then just when you get lulled into that techno bliss that Boratto is so good at, Tejada drops the jacking old skool loop style rhythm to give it that distinct state-side feel. Too good indeed.

Ok, lets just back down to business here. If you have had a browse through the other posts here you would have come across a gentleman by the name of Len Faki with his track Death By House. Well just in case you were still alive he has teamed up with Dustin Zahn for this absolute monolith of a track.

It is an eleven minute aural torture chamber, real old skool big room sounds, jcked with a bassline that drills into the airwaves with the same amount of finesse as the machine that drilled the channel tunnel. The build up is apocalyptic, the if that wasnt enough it drops into the sickest break beat section that will mummify even the most seasoned.

I have seen him live and it was epic, I have listened to some of his In Search Of Sunrise mix albums and hated the wimped out mush that he is playing, then I have heard his mix Live In Amsterdam by Muzik and it is interplanetary. Favourite track of the moment, had it for a while but only gave it a good listen this weekend, and what a mistake I have been making by not pumping it. It comes from one of the stalwarts of the electronic scene of the last six years or so, the German supremo T. Schumacher. Always fresh and always super high quality his productions set the bar for others to follow on many levels. He has dabbled in electro, indie stuff and of course house, where this absolute gem belongs.

For those who may be new to good music, even to those of us who have heard it all, sit back and appreciate the depth of the funk that he drums up here, this is a small dark club track that is guarenteed to get you moving, the composition is flawless house music.

What a guy. HCCR sums up the emergence of the House music scene in the States and mainstream worldwide. He was there when the sound exploded out in the '90's, has remixed for all the big pop stars including Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, P. Diddy, the list goes on. He is now at the forefront of the new House sound once again, being one of the first in the MOS tight Sessions compilations, he has his own label and a string of pumping residencies around the globe.

Here is a selection of some of his more recent work. The collaboration with the great Jose Nunez (another House master) is a simply sublime piece of peak time stomping grinding grooved out slickness that forces your feet to move.

Then there is his recent remix of the Dahlback modern classic, he does such a sweet treatment to the original, taking it firmly into the new sounds of today and eradicating any of the tired electro elements, making it into a bending tech looping thang!

Next is another of his collaborations this time he gives us his take on a beefed up minimal style track, with his trademark infectious groove.

Lastly is his take on the truly classic Hardrive track, a nice commercial rework with a pounding beat.

Deep house techno bizniz going on now. This cat has a cool little history behind him, not to mention the ability to create some very deep and atmospheric tracks. This is one of his more recent albums, it seems he is onto a god thing getting put out on great labels such as Dessous and Poker Flat to name a few.

This album is about after hours introspective stuff, it strips the groove right down and pumps it full of soul with some reggae drums crackling in at times on the deep Human. Striptease is an instant classic and is the perfect track for those early evening sun down sessions or even an early morning ease you into the day thing.

Japanese Revenge has also been released on Systematic and is a more traditional deep house sound.

These guys are bad! They were behind the simply massive Little Mountain Records release that featured on Sander Klienenberg's This is 2 album titled 7th Morning.

They hail from the Celtic Isle, a place renowned for its music not to mention the peoples ability to drink and generally be merry. This track is a well merry one! Fresh of their Location Unknown EP on the Rekluse label its the wonderfully named Ravejuice.

Tribal tech madness through and through with a swarming breakdown that will send any d-floor into a mess. The looping tribal percussion hooks you straight away too, watch out!!!

If you scroll down and find the post on Steve Lawler re: his track Carnivali mixed by the legend Gabriel Ananda you will find a slice of pure psycadelic house music, pumping rhythm, driving bass and snares and a totally mind shifting psycadelic force throughout, without a doubt one of my fav tracks of the last five years.

Anyway this post is not about that track! But another that follows neatly on in the vibe of that one. This time its from the enigmatic Hideo Kobayashi. The track is a melodic dream that loops and sings to you over a bumping house bass riff, the timing is totally psycadelic, dropping in and breaking down at slightly off times, the groove is perfectly interspersed with reverbed snares and there is a guitar riff that flows throughout that is mesmerising. フルパワー!

I first got into this guy when he appeared on a Satoshi Tommie (Legend) album called ES-B try and get it. His sound just hooked me in straight away, so techy and so housey (tech-house perhaps???doh) but of the very highest order. His latest album is Fractals and each track is a sonic excursion into the mind of a truly great producer. He catches the same energy of the early US tech producers juan Atkins , Derrick May, Joey Beltram and I very much see him following on their strong tradition of soul-full techno. Kinda getting into a bit of an indie dance swing now and seem to be thinking bout these tracks.

Justice are......well if you havent heard of them or know anything about them get informed big time. These are two very very indecent producers, they are trained killers, their particular speciality is making you freak out, like right out. Their debut album "Cross" was a escapade in sonic destruction of anything you thought you knew about dance music and about what was cool. Of that album DVNO stood out immediately for me. It was drenched in swager that made the paint peal off the walls with its ice cold vibe. It made me feel like a loser instantly it was so next millenium cool. Of the DVNO remixes this one is the pinnacle of the bunch. Please, do me a favour if you download this, play it very loud on a system worth some metal.

Lets just call him R-Tap. Man can this guy turn out a track (please see the post below for his total MONSTER Tanzgefuhl, like liquid nitrogen fresh jacking sounds) herehe is with some of his more recent stuff. Klinker is everything sweet rolled into one ear smelting, mood elevating sonic treat. It has all the elements, the kicking beat that is full on chunky at times, then a beautiful strange mini break hook that leads into a reverbed loop section to hypnotise, then breaking into a lush soundscape with just the hints of the hook and the bass kick combo never letting go.

And then as if that wasnt enough, here is his track with the guy below Hermanez. I am a little lost for words with this track, it is just total bounce tech maddness. I am in love with the chunky tech electro sound that has been flowing around for the last year or so, this is that sound at its very finest, proof of Tapia's talent that I heard first when I jammed the Mini Jack EP, not to mention what we can expect in the future from both these cats.

Whoa! Whats happening, we are going all Indie Dance all of a sardine!!?? It seems that Indie Dance has settled down a bit from the heady days of Klaxons et al and found its place in the hustle bustle and I am happy to report that from where I am sitting it has found a very nice little spot. These guys really typify the sound these days, very poppy (some of it of course) and very catchy, trust me, there is a good chance you will be singing the chorus for a few days.

The Air France mix is a striped down, discofied version with probably more longevity than the original (which I am totally murdering by playing too much) but still very nice. NJOY.

Back in the attack! First things first, tracks. So many have been catching my attention over the last little while. One of these has been a remix by the Brazilian tech meister Gui Boratto of the truly seminal Pet Shop Boys. These guys have been a key part of the dance movement for as long as I have been alive and in the mould of the legendary Kraftwerk have been instrumental in pushing the boundaries of synth music. These guys have come out with some new stuff and have gotten a couple of the new blood (Kurd Maverick mix also on the loose).

This track is a true listening bliss, Boratto showing us just how versatile and in many ways commercial he can be with this stunner of a remix. The beat has a hypnotic thing that just makes you want to groove and groove and groove and the melodies are haunting and totally atmospheric. Download it, wrap your ears around it, get into the vibe.

For those who haven't heard of them and the label do yourself a big favour and dig up some of their stuff, try to find an EP called Grand Theft Audio (DRM010) and listen to their track called Long Time, pure jacking house music bliss. Timeless.

Moving on, here they are with their latest release with two tracks both very very kool. My fav is the Disco Odyssey by Crazy P, I havent heard a production like this in ages, just pure groove night out tune, it doesnt get much better on the dancefloor when this baby 'drops'.

This guy has it locked down very very tight. His sound is one of the most addictive substances known to man I reckon, his basslines......well I dont even know where to start here, they are his, he owns them in a way that other producers dont. Just reading his story lets you see how epic this cat is, he comes from Cuba and was the son as a Salsa artist who got into dancing at an early age only to hear electronic sounds via the radio (how many of us can relate to that!) and becoming fascinated with it. He then moved to Dallas...well check the rest out at his Myspace.

As far as the music goes, just download the tracks, and play them loud preferably on a system that has a bit of heat to it. Or your headphones, and marvel at the tight tight tracks.

This is the first release I have heard from the Argentinean maestro and I am in love with it. he has a great history, full of music right from the get go, experience as a drummer (something that comes across right away in all the tracks especially My Own band) and extensive dj action too.

The release in question is entitled Euphrasia and the vibe is deep and seductive tech house at its best. The bass lines are thick and dubby in the best way and coupled with the truly stellar percussion it creates a groove that is pure tech funk. All round very high quality business.

Hot energy is what is pumping through these two tracks in the classic Breaks style. Here we have two of the scenes main players, Aquasky who hail from the classic Jungle and D&B scene, with their first releases appearing on the seminal Moving Shadow label back in the 90's. The group took to the Breaks scene like a duck to water and have been rocking with the likes of Meat Katie & Tayo to name but a few. Here they are remixing the Electro classic from 06 Exceeder. The track starts off like the original, an into that was made for a Break Beat, then they bring in some heavy noise factor with the dropping of the Electrofied break bass bin eater bassline.

Next up is one of my fav Breaks outfits Plump Dj's, the track Rocket Soul. Here we have very typical Plump's fair with all of the chunky kick and warbling basslines that we have become accoustomed to, with a break that is as anthemic as ever, where are those hands??

This kinda sums up much of the commercial Breaks sounds, very hands in the air anthem style stuff, but you cannot deny the fun factor. Let the beats roll!

Steve Lawler has always had an edge about him. Since he bust onto the scene back way when, he has always been fresh and perfectly leftfield in his selections on mix compiliations (the classic Lights Out Series being my fav of his). I remember seeing him first I think of the cover of his other GU release Nubreed, then he perfectly summed up what the GU guys were trying to capture in the Nubreed series and today his has not lost a bit of that Nubreed edge that he carried off so well in his seductive tribal laced sounds.

This remix done by the legendary Gabriel Ananda to me perfectly sums up his sound, tribal futuristic with a true prog vibe throughout it, almost like psycedelic house music of the highest order. A great track that I will be listening to for ages.

I have a soft spot for Beckers, alongside his long time partner D-Nox he has given me some classic rhythmic delights, the dark mind bending rhythms that pulse through his releases are always a treat. He has done some great work recently on his own, see the Astronivo post below, which is always good to see. It would seem judging by the comparison of his solo stuff with that with D-nox, he is the brains behind the sick looping rhythms and percussion that kills.

This release with Hatfield is a fine example of Beckers style. It is dark and teched out of the park. Boris Brejcha adds his reverb bass bin twister to the EP totally tripping it out, both are right off the top shelf. Please enjoy!

Deep dark menacing bass. That is the theme to this release form the young talent Sam Ball. He is one to watch as his production career is taking off in a good way. He has a great sound too, it takes from electro and techno mainly but also some more trancey vibes to be found flowing. All round very high quality business. This EP is my fav to date of the tracks I have heard of his. Each track is totally up for it, full of edge and dark appeal, the type that makes gritty electro and techno so hot. Deep deep deep is the first thing that comes to mind when you listen to this Frenchmen's 717 track. It is a solid piece of deep rhythmic house music, he is not scared to take elements of dub and techno and whip them together to create something soulful and jacking in its groove. The D'Julz mix is the one that caught my ear initially, it has a rolling peak hour thump to it where the original keeps things more after hours. It is minimal in its construction but the rolling bassline just keeps us hooked properly.

Kris Menace is part of the enigmatic French electronic scene that just oozes kool from every pore. His sound is one part space disco two parts raw sound with a dash of groove and shaken. A very fine, and classy concoction that is to be enjoyed with good friends and a loud system if you dont mind. All in all a cool sound that is almost kitch in its appeal, quite tongue in cheek and ironic like only a Frenchman can be (or at least pull off!!) He seems to be branching out from his other crew mates aka Alan Braxe, Fred Falke etc. each awesome talents in their own right, towards a slightly rougher sound, but still with his unmistakable charm. Hypnotic Disco - Eric Prydz

Here is one of those tracks that just sails off on its own wind. It comes from the ever dynamic, ever brilliant ever fresh and so commercially successful at the same time, Eric Prydz. Some how he manages to create the scene as he goes, such is the force behind what he does and what he puts out. He is as at home remixing Sven Vath as he is doing some hyper commercial track, and none of them ever loose the Prydz vibe and integrity. He is a force of nature this guy. Here is is with one of his best remixes to date in my opinion, that of Jim Rivers (another fav of mine) and Paolo Mojo's What Ron Carroll Said, the title is a cheeky jab at Bob Sinclar, Ron Carroll and Axwell's What a Wonderful World's vocals, but Prydz doesnt care for the reference instead he turns out a haunting and intoxicating piece of programming. The intro vocal pretty much sums it up - voodoo with dance music. Stop, listen.

First heard of this guy from surfing the world of music blogs and was immediately hooked on his kinda laid back groove sound. It was at first not at all obvious and in your face but just good deep house with some great melodic synths. The more I listened to his stuff the more I liked it and the more I was playing it as it just mixes so well with all deeper styles. Because it is so minimal in its deepness (can I even say that!) it really brings a certain class to a mix, providing just the right amount to slip between the more obvious or rich sounds.

I fell in love with his music back in about 06 when I first heard the infectious disco techno classic Incident played across the airwaves by Danny Howells live at Ultra Fest Back then. Since then I have always been really impressed with his releases. Impressed actually doesnt sum up the feeling of listening to a Voorn track however, it is more like transported to a place where things make some kind of perfect sense! They are as different as they are good which is the sign that he is some kind of genius. He is as at home turning out a massive techno dancefloor moster like MPX309 (handle with care), or releasing classic drifting deep house, or even breaks and ambient stuff although this really follows on in the footsteps of the techno greats like Juan Atkins et al who created some of the most powerful ambient tracks alongside the rest.

His label Green is also a wealth of great tracks and collaborations that never ceases to suprise. All in all this guy is one of the most complete musicians I have had the privilege of listening to. Here is a slice of the goodness, from Voorn to me to you!

Its not everyday you come across a really great track lets be honest. There are maybe ten or so good ones, some that you will want to hold onto, but real greats are rare for sure. Even rarer these days is a great album especially since albums themselves are not as predominant in dance music as perhaps other more pop genres. That is why when you do, it is like walking along in a forest and you come to a clearing and the sun is shining down through the clearing brightly and its good! That is something like what we have going on with Seva K's new album called The Album.

As you work your way through the tracks the first thing that hits you is the quality of the production, the thick layers of rich sound that are so skillfully crafted together. Immediately you know that you have something of quality on your hands. The sound is a subtle mix between great deep house and some more proggy stuff, the result is something that really sounds like the music of now. There is just the right amount of clicks and pops to keep your interest high but it never relies on that so as to become 'minimalesque'.

Of course the ultimate litmus test of any album is can you press play and just let it play, can the tracks all blend together into one 73 min audio narrative? The answer with Seva K's The Album is unequivocally yes!

When electro house fist hit the dancefloor circa 2006 for me, it really injected a fresh energy back into what was a bit of a tired club dance music scene, it was perfect soundtrack to friday night, full of energy and madness, just the right combo to make you feel obliged to loose it. Given the scene has moved on a bit and is now mixing quite freely with the whole indie dance thing a la Boys Noize etc which is not only a logical progression but in my opinion much needed for the electro scene which gains some underground cred from the association, it was in danger of becoming a trifle staid. But that hasnt stopped a few real gem artists emerging in the recent years. Enter Miles Dyson. The boy is ill in his head, nothing more to say. Some of the phattest basslines and warped melodies this side of the old speed garage movement. Also here is a mix by the legendary Utah Saints who have been influencial in the a variety of scenes forever, rrespect. Enjoy the toxicity.

Damn that Kid! Just cant seem to keep his hands off of the production machinery and that goodness for it, what we have here is the stuff of playground dreamz. His style is disco fantastic, synth soul heaven meets dutty riffed out techno that is unmistakable in its authenticity. First caught him as New Ordinament, putting out some very fresh sounds, a melted disco house that you would have to try really hard not to fall in love with, this was on Desyn Masiello's (another huge talent BTW) fantastic Balance album a few years back. Then I recently got back into his mojo with his mix of The Egg's track Nothing that is listed here. All round bloody good show old I mean young chap!

You know the feeling when you hear a track or an artist for the first time and it just blows your mind, you get bitten by a strange bug that makes you want to listen to the song again and again and again and again and again . . ok you get the drift. This guy did that to me, the track was Over Here, Over There off his Party Animals album. I couldnt even get past the first minute and a half it was just so meaty and mad, the kick is totally insane and the bassline just rolls relentlessly then the hi hat and the mechanics kick in like a giant machine, with a reverbed vocal snippet and you are just like 'oh man!' My friend who gave me the album said this is nothing wait until you hear the track Unreal. Well it took me about a week of pumping the first track till I got to it, and let me tell you Unreal made the other track seem silly!

This guys sound is full on psy-trance with extra fries and a double thick shake, eat in! It is the business, the goods, the money, the balls, the boss. He takes no prisoners either, instead he prefers to lay it on thick with each album from track one to the last track, each a pounding delightful 8 minute extravaganza.

To get the ball rolling here I have included a remix he did of dance giant's Orbital's track Remind. This is a set starter, finisher, in betweener whatever, it is just massive, a swirling, twirling, buzzing, hissing serpent of a track that picks you up and doesn't put you down again.

Next is his Black Belt Album, a true slice of what he is all about. track that stand out, well all of them really but for me the title track Black Belt is one of the best, the vocal is just priceless '. . . . hold onto a giant bird', you have to love the sheer craziness of it. Something like a carnival ride on acid!

Black & White are at the front of the pack of a new wave in psy-trance music. Their sound borrows from all different spheres of dance music, electro, techno, psy and mixes it all up to produce laser precise tracks that pump pure energy from start to finish. The emphasis is less on psychedelic atmosphere and more on perfectly timed breaks and drops that whirl you up into a electronic frenzy. This sound has really taken off around the globe and is appealing to a whole new audience introducing them to the more traditional psy sound while pushing the boundaries of what was done and what was not. What they seem to have done with their music is create a sound that is simply infectious without adhering to any genre formulas and the result is truly epic.

Here is their Sharp EP that includes monster tracks like the uplifting Dirty Herring. This track takes you on a tour through the different elements of their sound. It has strong psy fever to it while using cues and designs that are almost reminiscent of hard house. The vibe is way more effective than hard house though and the psy noise never lets you forget that. The break and the subsequent section are almost disco-esque with electo synths pouring down on us. A great and truly unique dance track.

Created for Control is a similar affair but with a strong techno/electro feeling throughout. The energy on this track is mammoth, it just pounds its message out to you.....and you love it!

Also included is a mix of the dynamo Astrix's Under Beat. Their remix is a full on psy affair and reminds us that they know how to do that and do that well too.

Something seems to be wrong, when did tech beats suddenly find their way onto the best singles of the year list??? Who cares! Audiojack are here and they have got the goods to turn our brains inside out. Theirs is a deep dark bass rich sound that sticks in your memory and makes you want to hunt out their music, it makes you take the time to listen to any mix or production of theirs that you come across, being wowed more often than not at the depth of the stripped down sound.

Here are some of their more recent works, with my favourite being the mystical deep serpent of a tune Al Arab, a remix they have done for Bradler & Dualton. They had some good elements to work with to being in the form of some wonderfully atmospheric middle eastern strings (always the best) and some great conga percussion that gives the track such a tribal vibe in the first minute or so. Then we see that this is no longer Bradler & Dualton when the massive deafening bass ball of a kick drops onto us like a piano from a 30 storey building. The boys bring in some of the deepest and emotive tech electro elements all with fantastic head swirling stereo effects churning the sequences upside down and back again. The beat is almost like a break beat and this is what sets these two apart, they are not scared to bend the boundaries and make music that just sounds sick, forgetting all the formulas. 1st class shizzle.

Next is their mix for the legendary Underworld, Holding the Moth. This track is also in a league of its own. The track is filled with sounds that hook you in right away and mesmerise you, like watching an insane graphic visulisation, its hypnotic techno at its best.

Lastly but most definitely not least is their mix of Noir's anthemic-tech track lessons. Here again their sound is immediately distinguishable even though it is clothed in a slightly more user friendly guise. The track is no less mean and the production is if anything some of their best. The break is definitely the highlight giving us that familiar classic vibe, reminiscent of Inner City, that we love so much. A great dancefloor tack.

Breaks are always up for it, always full power and the Plump Dj's crew are the men in charge of the scene. The two brits have led the charge with the dynamic nu breaks sound that has been around since the early 00's, mixing heavy elctro and dubbed out elements into the sound they have emerged as something special. Some kind of magic. That is the only way that I can describe the little thing that Danny Howells has and that comes through into everything that he does musically speaking. It is a truly rare gene if you will that is only to be found in a very small group of musicians throughout time. If I had to sum it up into a word it would be style in the truest sense. Style has very little to do with fashion if anything at all, it has nothing to do with anybody else but the individual, it is a personal thing. Style to me is not just evident or lacking in dress and physical things but rather finds its root in the manner and attitude of the individual. It manifests in an effortless ability to intuitively feel the groove of life that is inside the person and to express that through action and in Mr. Howells' case music. Everything that Danny Howells turns out musically has a unique and timeless sense of style that flies high above the rest of the madding crowd.

His ability to select and mix music is in my view unparalleled. He is highly skilled at combining the myriad of styles and emotions in dance music into one glorious hedonistic and soulful mix, a mix that will sit you down and fill your mind to begin with only to pick you up and get you moving uncontrollably as he picks the tempo up.

The Renaissance Mix Collection is dance music royalty, a series that began with the dynamic duo Sasha & Digweed back in the early 90's. This sees the return of the legend and who better to be at the helm of the first installment but Danny Howells. This mix is one of his best that I have had the pleasure of hearing to date and exhibits a selection of his own new production material adding to the joy.

Contrast is something that makes electronic music so special. You can take a seemingly mono tone sanitary sound and when contrasted over a changing synth or bass note it comes to life in a way that you could never have imagined when it was on its own, full of feeling, nostalgia and emotion. As with individual sounds so too with electronic music as a whole with each style blending in harmony with another and so too giving it a new form and feel, one that is as much a product of the other as it is of itself. Ambient music is the beautiful imagination rich partner to the more beat orientated styles. It has given us the ability to delve deeper into the sheer size or the sounds that are whizzing around us and over our heads with its more hectic cousins.

Good ambient music I find is like a journey inwards, sliding effortlessly between the pieces of life and shining light on the beautiful shapes and designs that are to be found there. Innervisions, the Berlin based label fronted by deep house producers Ame and Dixon, has created a compilation that is worthy of the highest dance music accolade, repetitive playing for years to come on all music lovers stereos. The album is called Muting the Noise and it is a cross section of some of the brightest and most respected minds and hearts in electronic music today all of which have put forward their ambient dreams to share with us. The melodic and perfectly named Doldrums by Ame stands out initially but as you move on to the other tracks the album itself opens up to you. All in all an instant classic and a much needed breath of contrast to the world of music today.

Two tracks here both have a similar vibe to them and one that is just so catchy. These are the types of tracks have a sort of hidden power to them. They are anything but obvious, never in your face with the sounds and the breaks etc. but they have such a strong persuasiveness about them. They are the tracks that you will listen to today and then again in a year and you will still love them to bits.

The artists in question are the dynamo Zoo Brazil, who needs no introduction on this blog, and the wonderful Kosmas Epsilon, one of my all time favourite groups who pulse out their own distinct of fantastically dreamified beats.

Both of the tracks have a retro spaced out disco feel to them that is so fresh, both are filled with epic hypnotising loops and synths, this is deep soul'd out techno of the first degree. Please listen and enjoy.

Aka Tilt, Stoneproof, Space Manoeuvres, Skanna, John Graham. This native British producer now living in the States has had a huge hand in shaping the landscape of modern dance music. His tracks filled the late 90's and early 00's with some of the most blissful forceful trance under either the tilt or Quivver guise, he released some of the classic progressive tracks of that time and has never let up. He was and continues to get played by superstar dj's like Sasha, Oakenfold, Pete Tong. This year sees the release of his debut full length album Dirty Nails & Vapour Trails and let me say that it is breathtaking. It showcases his diverse capabilities and musical roots and shows the current crop of music makers how its done. Each track is a beauty in its own right, and this is his first album!

One thing I have to say about a D-Nox release is that I really look forward to getting it and hearing it. His music has a great energy to it. He takes pieces from psy-trance, from techno of course and from progressive styles and blends them together to create tracks full of feeling and emotive response not to mention music that you cannot sit still and listen to. My favorite aspect is the loops that he incorporates into his tracks that give them a wonderfully mechanical feel them, see the NOP mix below to hear a great example of his brilliant use of loops to create a whole track. On the dancefloor is where the tracks come to life and mixed with full on strobes and fx, the result is madness in a room.

Tenaglia. One of the most underated producers/dj's of today he has a history that tells the tale of a man in love with music through and through. He is like the ultimate survivor in the game of dance music. He has done it all. remixed the great pop artists of our time, mixed tracks across the globe released epic mix compilations that seem to always be effortlessly fresh in their track selection and concept giving us new ways to view the music of the moment. Some say he has gone off the boil a bit of late with the emergence of such strong mainstream acts compared to which he may seem stayed to the uninformed and passer-by scensters. On the contrary '08 has seen his sound, deep chunky tech grooved out bass rich beats make up the bulk of the freshest releases from the likes of Rene Amesz, Format:B, Lutzenkirchen to name a few. This sound makes up the backbone of Tenaglia's game and one thing is for sure, his seat in the dance music hall of fame continues to be without question deserved.

The German based force field Len Faki comes to us now with the massive Death By House track that featured strongly on Sven Vath's summer classics from Cocoon's Ibiza stint. The track was made for the floor of the big rooms of the world, taking the deep and gritty techno sound right into the peak hour. It has all the elements that make a great big room tune, not too much fuss, a great vocal loop remenent of the Jungle Brothers group from the States in the early 90's, Faki turns up the heat with some horns of epic proportion and the classic techno clap just brings it all back to the groove which pumps throughout. Big room madness at its absolute best!

When looking for true artists in the world of electronic music lets face it many of the guys and girls out there fall a little short. This is only due to the existence of some true giants in the field of mechanically creating feeling and emotion through the binary code of a computer processor. James Holden is one of them. Since his mystical track Eternity that came out on Nick Warren's epic Global Underground Amsterdam album I have had a great love for his creations and listening to some of them earlier inspired me to share the magic.

Today he is even more original and fresh in his approach to the scene and the tracks he is putting out. He has his own label the aptly named Border Community, responsible for the At The Controls mix series of which his inaugural album is still one of my most listened to. Despite walking his own path through the scene his tracks today never lack energy or his trademark emotive essence, some similar left field players seem to forget what makes a track worth listening to and create something that is as much a reaction to that which they try to avoid as anything else. JH however seems to spend less time with all that and focuses on creating something to move you. Here are a few that live up to this and then some.

The first rave I ever attended as a teenager in the mid 90's was headlined by Sasha & Digweed, dont need to say any more, only that of all the artists in electronic music I have a special admiration and respect for Sasha. He has been there with me on my journey into sound, releasing music that has carried me forward and never backwards. Tracks and mix compilations that have inspired me long after I have heard them for the first time. His track Xpander shook the dance music world when it came out around '99, it was so deep and so hypnotic that it almost defied what we knew about the music we loved. It stood out on its own and even to this day very few tracks have been able to join it in its beautiful world. It found its real place at the end of his Global Underground Ibiza mix album as the finale, a perfect end to a perfect album if there ever was any (GU13). I could go on and on and on.

This time it has a cheeky remix from the peoples champ Deadmau5, he does the usual Mau5 treatment paying good homage to the original structure but mixing things up a fair bit with that trademark Mau5 kick doing its thing. In my view this is one of those tracks where the original cannot be touched by a remix but I am sure that is not the Mau5 is attempting to do here, rather to pay respect to a legend. Whatever his aim, its a fun remix.

The Swede hits back this time with the help of Spanish Maestro Gabi Newman on the rework of his track Topless. I heard this track a little while ago and loved the bass hook straight away. It has a sort of deep electro tribal thing going on that I am a real sucker for and the rest of the track are emotive and uplifting in the right way.

Saiko-Pod started out in the 90's working some serious psy-trance beasts into being. They have released on some of the great psy-trance labels like Flying Rhino & T.I.P world to name some, here they(Ian Ion) are back with a very sick crossover release that should have the prog kids jumping as well as the electro phreaks, as a psy track it kinda fits into the new breed of grumbling electroesque early hour club tracks, still having strong psy elements flowing throughout. Bottom line fuck all categories, this track is made to destroy anything that gets in its way, give it a good system and the damage will follow.

I first heard of these two irregular producer/Dj's when with their truly otherworldly remix of John Dahlback's Vitamin. This track snaps and growls and whizzes at you like its a mamoth serpent uncoiling at an intruder. The kick and percussion is housey of nature but this is layered with lines and lines of pure psycadelica, making the track something special. They are Extrawelt.

The group is made up of two Germans who were bitten by the electronic music bug at a very early age. One of their latest releases is a true reflection of their distinct sound of electronic assault music it is called Mind Over Doesn't Matter and it attacks your senses in oh so lovely a way. One thing that I notice on this release as with Vitamin is their amazing ability to create a sense of distance within the tracks elements. It is as if some sounds are coming from the next room and some echoing far away. This is part of what makes their track Erste Universicherte Allgemeinheit so epic, it feels almost claustrophobic, the noises push up on you and invade your brain, taking you to the year 2088 and beyond with a potent sci-fi energy. This is future groove at its best.

Musically there is one artist who has been shining through the mass of production that is coming out every day, a Greek going by the name Dousk. He is another who tends to prefer to stay on his own road rathe than follow that of the pack when it comes to the more commercial styles. Whether the harder techy stuff or the melodic grooved out stuff, all his musical has real life energy in it, the kind that comes from raw inspiration at the hands of nature and emotion. It is either pushing you to jump up and down driven by the pounding kick or the pulsing rhythms or it is taking you out of your room and off on a soaring trip around the world (very possibly to the azure Aegean islands).

This is music for the soul first and foremost and you can tell that it is something that is very strong in this guy, a sense of all the beauty and vibe in the world. His releases continue to impress and to move me with every new one and I look forward to a new one in a special way.

For those of you who have been stuck on an island for the last three years or so let me just bring you up to speed in the electronic music world, Sweden has taken over full stop! I can't remember the exact moment when it happened although I suspect that it had something to do with Axwell & Prydz, but the Swedish house and prog sound is now the mainstay of the ever growing new world order of electronic enjoyment. Led by the two guys mentioned already as well as Dahlback, Angello, Ingrosso, Dabruck & Klein to name a very small few, the sound has just exploded. if I had to say what links them all I would say it is their effortless use of the mighty synth tool to create a emotional sound scape that cant help but make you love it. These guys can pretty much be credited with the resurgence of dance music around five years ago, a time when hip hop and pop were ruling the roost bigtime. These innovative sound engineers decided that enough was enough and they created a force that inspired a whole new generation of music makers.

Of all of the artists Eric Prydz deserves to be singled out due to his sheer presence in the scene worldwide. He has created a whole style unto himself with the synth under a variety of aliases. He has in the space of this year produced massive tracks in the prog arena and in the big room techno scene. Every track of his is memorable in its own way.

But the guy I am particularly interested in is a relative background player in the scene for years who is starting to really flex sonic muscles of his own, Zoo Brazil. The ZB sound is a very versatile one that tends to create its own category in the process. Strong electro synth sounds are a main feature that give it a very contemporary feel to much of it, the basslines are thick and teched out, the rhythm is also distinctly techy in its hypnotic feeling, the combination is like a rich and vivid dream sound. What stands out for me is his resistance to fit into the commercial mould, preferring to create pieces that sing off their own sheet and often stand alone in the crowd. This is a sign that there is something deeper about Zoo Brazil that we will continue to see emerge as his sound grows 'louder' in the time to come.

What is it about the US house music sound that is so cool? When you hear good US house, either gospel or garage, it touches you in a way that no other style of electronic music can but I find it hard to pin down what it is I love about in the same way I can with other more obvious styles. I think that pretty much sums it up, it is never obvious nor does it rely on formulas to get its reaction. Perhaps this is so because much of the music is the product of artists who have a story behind them unlike others, unique to the marginalised demographics growing up in the urban sprawl of the East Coast cities during the 70's & 80's. These had to overcome the soulless environment and the hardships that each day presented to them in some way and house became their connection to that higher frequency that allows humans to rise up out of the suffering. That energy can be felt in the deep brooding sounds that can be found on the legendary record labels of the time, Strictly Rhythm, Nervous Records & Kind Street Sounds to name but a few.

Of these artists one has always stood out above the rest in my view, he is Kerri Chandler. This guy has been a prolific force in house music since the early 90's and continues today to release the freshest sounding tracks and mix albums as we speak. What sets him in a league of his own in my mind is his ability to create a sound that has such a strong jacking house energy but with some of the strongest electronic tech and deep sounds that come together to produce something that is truly unique, something truly Kerri Chandler.

Disco has a special place in dance music history and even today seems to live on a planet all on its own with sporadic visits from its younger cousin house. It is without a doubt one of the most hedonistic forms of music the world has ever know, driven by its single minded search for the ultimate high in a creshendo of soaring synths and percussion. In disco we can find the undiluted essence of what makes great house music so infectious. The basslines are there in their most organic and natural state, the hi hats and snares and percussive elements are raw and in most instances are live recordings and not reprocessed electronic versions of the sound. The bars in the songs have a slight variance to them, the kind of asymmetry that can only come from a human playing the instrument and something that makes disco such a unique form of dance music with such a special energy.

This year has seen the emergence of one of the most exciting disco acts in a while hitting the mainstream. The sensational, the ineffable Hercules & Love Affair. The story behind the group is the stuff of disco legends, city people working the 9-5 with music carrying them from day to day only to let the pain and joy of it all flow through them into their creations and out onto the airwaves. The sound is a rich deep mix of disco flavour with house and stripped down techno cuts. The vocals are true disco and are the glue that binds the eclectic mix of rhythm soul and sound together in perfect harmony. The product is an underground sound for the dance floors of the world. This is the music you will listen to for years to come, dont stop Herc dont stop!

The ever dramatic and soul invading sounds of Pig & Dan are what we are starting off with in this post. I have heard an interview with these two cool customers on Dance Department and they sound like they have the whole thing locked down. This great attitude comes across in their emotive and bass rich techno sound that they have formulated. I first heard these guys a while back with a track called Addiction which was on a Sander Kleinenberg compliation a few years back. Then I fell in love with their track called Touch which was the last track on Sebastian Ingrosso's MOS Sessions album. I must have played this track over one hundred times, pure perfection. Lately they have been going from strength to strength and have formed a strong relationship with the seminal Cocoon label (no introduction/information/blurb/ anything needed). This year has seen some of their best work too with massive Sly Detector making us remember why we love this music. Here they are remixing a track from another duo, D-Nox & Beckers and the result is no less forceful.

Next up is another full power pulsing piece of precise processed production (hmmm its too late at night/morning obviously) this time from the Bedrock stable and by the highly talented man from Israel, Guy J. All the tracks this man puts out impress me from a production quality perspective, my favorite being the ever fresh Agent Blue. This time he is remixed by the English Dynamo James Talk who takes Save Me and turns it into a truly epic piece of machinery. The bassline is huge and comes at you like a barrage of gigantic earth moving equipment. The hi hat and snare keep you right in the game never letting you go while lasers and bleeps come at you from every corner. The synth elements are very high quality and the break is something of your wildest dreams. A great peak hour track if ever there was one. Listen to the size!

Since I was so impressed with his mix of the Tomcraft track from the previous post I feel the need to dedicate some time and space to the dynamite Ramon Tapia. This cat has a story behind him that reads like a cool movie. His dad fled Chile during the oppressive regime meeting his mother in Holland (check out more on his Myspace page). His music history is as eclectic, siting influences like the funktastic Michael Jackson and other soul acts, he also spent some time dipping into the frenetic Gabba style, in my mind anyone who can brave that sound deserves a medal but my experience on that is very small. The bottom (bass)line is that he is cranking out some dancefloor manic tunes.

I came across his stuff first with his Mini Jack EP which I have posted a track from below. The whole EP is like a small cross section of Ramon Tapia's twisted housed out brain, taking us from the deep house techy sound of Morning Funk - a head bumping ass shaking striped down early hours groove, to the simply brilliant Tanzgefuehl - a loose your head peak hour deep tech house rhythmic winding belter. The break is a talking siren that seems to be saying 'go mad to this track', in the background pumps a warped piano hook that just never lets you get a minutes rest from the second it comes in at the first beat.

The other highlight for me on the EP was the genius Just Me. This track caught me off guard completely, it starts out so mellow with some nice minimal effects and hi hat and echoed out clap only to wind up into a massive warbling sub-bass drop that always gets you right in the centre. The best aspect of the track though is the totally crazy filtered vocal that is too cool. The rest of the EP is as cool but to be honest I haven't been able to get to those tracks yet I am just stuck on these. Do yourself a favor check out his style and play his stuff full volume.

I recently heard what for me is in the running for THE track for '09 and it came from an old favorite producer of mine. This guy has been making waves in the scene from as early as '93 (look for his monster called The Mission, a true dance floor destroyer circa '96) and boy were they some seriously good sounding waves. The man in question is Tomcraft.

The track I heard that blew my socks off was called When I Was Sixteen and it packs a punch and a vibe that is unmistakably Tomcraft. The track gets going right from the start, hooking you into the rhythm with a totally infectious clap/snare combo that rings with metallic reverb ever so slightly so as to send a shiver down the spine. Right at this point I knew I was going to love this track a suspicion that was confirmed the instant the pounding bassline drops in like a twenty story building falling onto you (ouch!). Then the deep and dark sounding synths take hold and set the mood for the brooding building high pitched almost organ like synth that builds and dives over the crashing beat. The track never looses its composure, remaining ice cold and methodical in its attack of the groove, something how I imagine the man Tomcraft to be in fact. In fact the best way to describe this slick piece of sonic seduction is ice cold.

The EP comes packing more punch however, in the form of a remix by another drop dead cool producer Ramon Tapia. His remix of the above track is almost flawless. The size of the original's sound has been compressed and crammed into a tight track that is like the backroom brother of the big room original. All the same elements that make the original epic are kept but Tapia turns the into shortened jacking bites. The kick is a large and strong force to be reckoned with while the bassline wraps around it like the two are in love. Truly I fell for it!

Now to delve into the weird and wonderful realm of psy-trance. Probably in my view one of the most under commercialised areas of electronic music and home to some of the true wild spirits of the music making world. These guys and girls are just existing on a whole other musical wave length, one where nature, sound, energy and emotion become one. If anything this genre takes the concept of electronic music to its extreme. The sounds are nothing less than other worldly, the energy is explosive bordering on the atomic, and the quality of much of the production is at the highest level. Many of the artists play live sets, utilising processors and instruments to create the music in real time, taking the bass deeper and tighter, building the drops up even more and basically turning out the stuff released on disc on steroids. For those of you who have not experienced a psy-trance party and you are into dance music of any kind then you simply have to make the effort to check it out, it will blow your mind. The pinnacle of these parties are the outdoor events that span the globe with ardent followers moving with in a futuristic tribal movement. Here the music and nature become one and you get to see how it works in the environment much of the music was created to be listened in.

There are today so many highly talented producers in this scene, many of which hail from Israel. The Israeli sound is a very distinct one, typified by artists like Astrix and Hujaboy to name but a few. The very popular Hommega Records is the label responsible for launching the Israeli sound onto the world stage and giving Artists like Sub 6 and Psy Sex the platform they needed to shine. In the last few years artists like Astrix have led a strong crossover movement blending psy elements with other more commercially formulated styles to great success and we are beginning to see the emergence of more different styles within the broader title of psy-trance. One thing all the good music has and never looses is the raw energy and mind bending capability.

The scene is a truly global one however and artists from as far afield as South Africa (one of psy-trances original hot beds) are pushing the limits. My personal favorite is a young guy from the Netherlands who goes by the name Zen Mechanics (genius). His sound is very distinct as it has the perfect blend of psycadelic fever with the trademark rolling liquid sounding kick drum, layered over with rolling galloping basslines. Music that runs straight through your mind body and soul.

Hello! I have something worth shouting about here guys. This post we are taking things afterhours, breaking it down to the roots taking a journey through the rich silky soul'd out world of a young producer/dj who goes the name of Kreon. This guy hails from the magical land of Greece and for a place filled talented electronic artists (G-Pal, Kosmas Epsilon) This guy represents and then raises the bar by a whole lot.

His is a sound that is a collection of everything deep and cool in dance music. He is like a traveling alchemist, drifting through the different eras of house, collecting the soulful and the groovalicious, mining deep into the depths of funk and jazz, dusting off the classic vocal sounds and taking them all back to his lab to create true house art. His sound is never too much always just right. Just enough spaced out vibe, just a fat enough kick and the perfect percussion all woven with super funk piano, vocals and bass. And as a true sign of his talent he makes it all seem effortless as if anybody could just throw the track together but when you listen to the details it just keeps on going, getting more and more in depth. Pure power.

Next up is a group that are new to me but one that I just cannot get enough of. They are the indefinable Astronivo. Hailing from electronic musics holy land Tel Aviv their sound is a blend of the predominant sound from the area, namely psy-trance, and techy elements with a distinct deconstructed vibe throughout. The product is totally fresh deep and dark beats that create the perfect atmosphere for serious business. I came across them twice in a day, once on Ace Ventura's (Progressive psy-trance master) Re:Boot remix album (a high quality piece of work worthy of many posts unto itself) and then I saw their track at the top of tech/prog legend D-Nox's Beatport chart.

That track was their collaboration with a certain Dj Zombi called Anything You Want. It is a slice of just what makes these guys special, all the great elements around in electronic music at the moment melded into one eight minute treat (like a four seasons pizza, with skunk sprinkled on top). This track isn't joking though and the remix done by D-Nox's other half Beckers takes things to the next level. Here the deepness of the original is elevated a notch or two and turned into a building driving slamming tech beat express giving us everything we could have wanted.

Ah Jaytech, let me count the ways I love thee. This guy is right up there for me with the greats. His sound speaks to you on so many levels, he has glorious synths that echo over really spacey percussion, the kick is always full on and meaty and the basslines are driving and just delicious! He mixes the perfect amount of dream factor to the track with a good dose of teched out mechanics to keep the feet moving. Each song is like a seven minute story. While some of this new emerging style of driving synth house can err on the cheesy side this guy nails it down tight without ever crossing the line. He has just released a truly flawless full album called Everything is OK and it doesn't disappoint in the slightest, taking you from blissed out chill to full on rumbling melodic monsters.

This guy first caught my attention with his collaboration with Prompt on Yoshitoshi with the track inbound. Here is his latest remix of Xavi Beat aptly named Cyclic. The track is a typical peak hour heater with a great break and a full on bounding bass line that gets your head bumping every time. My favorite element has to be the snappy claps that give it a jacking feel that sets it apart from other tunes in this category. What comes through strong in the track is D-Formations deep emotive vibe that he creates in his tracks that give them all a real soul moving energy. This guy has been around for a while but it seems that his best is still to come if the current trend is anything to go by.

This post is dedicated to in my opinion one of the most dynamic and talented dj/producers of my time. The techtastic Fergie. This man has a history that is something of a legend. Originally from Northern Ireland he moved to London at an early age and began djing under the mentorship of the late great Tony De Vit, the pioneer of hard dance at a legendary little club known as trade and one of the forerunners of the modern trance sound (basically that he was playing under the wing of this guy is insane). He then went on to become a headliner in his own right hosting a Radio One show, today he has his own label Excentric and is producing some of the most mind blowingly big techno tracks that just have all the elements completely sussed. The sound is nothing less than infectious aural mayhem, deep driving basslines, massive echoed horns and a groove that will make you wear a hole in your shoes! Give it up for Fergie.

Stop & Panic! - King Roc(pic) & Patrice Baumel

This is such a complete track in my opinion. It has the melodic element that blends you into the beat, ah the beat, so jacking, so meaty, so sick. Then we are hit my whirling tech synths and high hats that twirl us into the bassline that is deep and oh so grooving. Then he brings in the high pitched blip that can only be the sound of a panic attack! A very nice piece of back room business from King Roc, who I might add had been doing some damage on the machines with his remixes.

Next track is from another man du jour, Patrice baumel with his big summer hit Roar. This epic breakdown track has been given a kick and and some new fireworks from the duo Karami & Lewis and the result is truly ill. They give the track the edge it needed to enable us average people to be able to mix it and get the full effect of the track (somehow the original never sounded the same in my bedroom as it did when Dubfire & Sharam played it at opening of Space Ibiza????) Two tracks both with a distinct deep and grinding tone, bringing in some deep dark Africa vibes from the mother continent. First up in the ever brilliant Trentmoller with African people. This track has been on the circuit for a while but it is almost just coming into its own now, a sign of how fresh elements of Trentmoller's distinct rasping bubbling bass sound is.

Next is a track that just catches you the second you hear it and makes you want to get up and stomp, it is from a very slick producer who goes by the name Zomby the track called Spliff Dub with Rustie on the mix. The vocal loop is priceless and works so well with the synths in the break you gotta love it! One spliff a day keep de evil awaya! let that bass roll.

African People - Trentmoller

Zomby is a real rising talent in the genre blurring scene of Dubstep, his style is particularly fresh and can be seen in all its glory on his Where Were You In '92? album released on the Werk label where he shows how hot the early techno sound can be when filtered through Zomby's brain.
